Information is government’s biggest equity and it is essential that it is used for greater public good. Quick access to information is possible by throwing it open into the public domain.
With this background note we arrive at the definition of the Project Scope of the eGovernance Initiative at Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation.
The project encompasses all areas of municipal administration including tax collection, public health, civic amenities and citizen grievance redressal. The aim to the project initiated in the Year 1999 was to adopt and adapt cutting-edge technologies to be able to bridge the ever widening gap and the ensuing cynicism among the citizens about the ineffectiveness of the urban local bodies in Civic Administration and bring about a certain measure of transparency in the Civic Administration. To achieve this goal a centralized database of Information was created at GVMC with connectivity to MeeSeva Centers, Zonal offices, commercial banks and Private and Government Hospitals. The aim of the project was to provide complete internal computerization and networked access of all the information of importance and any consequence to an average citizen and to afford a user friendly interface. The project covers the entire gamut of civic services ranging from the facility of online payment of dues, filing of building plan applications and subsequent status queries regarding sanctions and approvals. Citizens can also report their grievances online and obtain status on the redressal of their grievances. It is also possible to obtain up-to-date information on the various developmental and infrastructural projects launched by the Corporation.
